How To Make Decorated Pots In Minecraft For Beginners

With the 1.20 Tails and Trails update came the Decorated Pot, which is like the gorgeous older cousin of Minecraft’s original Pot. It can be crafted easily with bricks but shines when crafted using the pottery shards from the new Archeology part of the game. Whether you’re an explorer wanting countless treasures or a decorator with abundant ideas, you’ll love bringing these pots home to your base!

How to Craft a Decorated Pot in Minecraft

To craft a Decorated Pot, you’ll need four components consisting of bricks and Pottery Sherds. A blank Decorated Pot can be crafted with four bricks, with one placed in the center of the top row, one in the left box of the middle row, one in the right box of the middle row, and one in the center of the bottom row.

To decorate the sides of the pot, the bricks can be substituted with Pottery Sherds. Replacing the top brick with a Pottery Shed will put the Sherd’s pattern on the back of the pot.

How to Craft Bricks

To craft bricks, you’ll need to find clay. Clay blocks can be found near sand and water, as well as in the water in Swamp biomes.

These clay balls can be smelted in a furnace to create bricks in a one-to-one ratio.

How to Get Each Pottery Sherd

As part of the Archeology update, Pottery Sherds can only be obtained by brushing suspicious blocks in the new Ruins structures. Each sherd comes from either suspicious sand or suspicious gravel in their respective Ruins structures, each of which is covered in the table below.

How to Move and Use Decorated Pots in Minecraft

Decorated pots are extremely easy to break and move around. To break them into their brick and sherd components, break them with an axe, hoe, pickaxe, shovel, or sword not enchanted with Silk Touch. Mining them by hand or with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch will cause the pots to drop themselves. Additionally, they will drop themselves if broken using a piston or by an explosion.

In the case that a Decorated Pot is broken, the items inside of it will drop as well regardless of whether the pot breaks into pieces or remains whole.

How to Put Items on Top of a Decorated Pot

Many items can be placed directly on top of a Decorated Pot as if it were a solid block. A common way to spruce up Decorated Pots is by adding a regular pot on top and placing a plant inside of it. The small pot is the same color as the larger variation and fits nicely in the hole at the top of the Decorated Pot.

You can also add any other decorative elements that you can place directly on top of blocks. This includes light sources, chains, and even Sniffer and Turtle eggs. Play around with it to discover your favorite combinations!

Upcoming Changes to Decorated Pots in Minecraft

While these changes are not currently implemented in Minecraft, they are exciting enough to share here. These changes come directly from Mojang’s Snapshot 23W41A, so their authenticity is guaranteed.

Using Decorated Pots as Storage

When the update is released, Decorated Pots will be able to hold up to a 64 stack of one item. They will not have a GUI— a Graphical User Interface— so players will have to directly interact with the pot to place items in and break it to pull items out. A hopper system can also be used to place items in as well as take them out.

Reading the Number of Stored Items

Players will be able to use a Redstone Comparator to read how many items are stored in a single Decorated Pot.

Stackable Pots

Decorated Pots will be able to be in stacks of 64 within your inventory.

Broken by Projectiles

If a Decorated Pot is hit by a projectile, it will break apart into its brick and sherd components.

Decorated Pot Interactions

Players will be able to interact with a Decorated Pot to make it wobble.
