Minecraft dyes are all about giving players the chance to customize certain decorative blocks in order to make builds more personalized. They can do many useful things, from changing your bed colors to allowing you to make rainbow mountains out of wool. There are sixteen types of dye currently available in Minecraft:

• Grey Dye – black dye + white dye
• Black Dye – ink sac, wither rose

What Can Brown Dye be Used for in Minecraft?

Like all other forms of Minecraft dye, brown dye is used to customize certain blocks to fit your aesthetic. The blocks affected range from wool to concrete and terracotta. They can also be used for more decorative things, like making more realistic brown leather armor and brown sheep.

Making Brown Sheep in Minecraft

​To dye a sheep brown, all you need is one brown dye. Hold the brown dye and approach the sheep you’d like to dye. Interact with it to dye the sheep’s wool brown!

Shearing the sheep will now produce brown wool. After eating grass, the sheep will continue to grow brown wool until you change the color of their wool again.

Making Brown Wool in Minecraft

In addition to dying a sheep brown, you can directly dye wool brown. Just combine one wool block and one brown dye in a crafting interface to produce one brown wool.

Making Brown Carpet in Minecraft

There are two ways to make brown carpets in Minecraft. The first is to place two brown wool blocks next to each other on a crafting table to craft three brown carpets.

The other way is to directly dye carpets brown by adding one carpet and one brown dye next to each other in a crafting interface.

Making a Brown Bed in Minecraft

Brown beds can be made in two ways. The first way is to collect three brown wool and three wooden planks. On a crafting table, place the three brown wool in the top row and the three wooden planks in the middle row. This will produce one brown bed!

Brown beds can also be made by dying beds with brown dye. Simply place one bed and one brown dye together on a crafting grid.

A brown banner can be crafted on a crafting table by placing one stick in the center box of the bottom row and filling the top and middle row boxes with brown wool.

Using a loom, brown patterns can be added to a banner with brown dye.

Brown concrete powder can be crafted using one brown dye, four gravel blocks, and four sand blocks. In the crafting table’s 3×3 grid, start by placing the brown dye in the top left box, then place one sand block in the top center and top right boxes. In order to make brown concrete, you need to get brown concrete powder wet. 

Brown concrete is truer in color and has a much smoother appearance than brown concrete powder.

Brown terracotta is crafted on a crafting table by placing one brown dye in the center of the 3×3 grid and filling the rest of the boxes with regular terracotta.

In order to craft glazed brown terracotta, you must first craft brown terracotta. After you have done so, simply smelt the brown terracotta in a furnace to turn it into glazed brown terracotta!

Brown stained glass can be crafted on a crafting table. Place one brown dye in the center box and fill the rest of the boxes with glass blocks. This is identical to the recipe for crafting brown terracotta.

There are two ways to make brown stained glass panes. The first is to use the same recipe as making brown stained glass, where you place one brown dye on the center of the crafting table’s grid and fill the rest of the boxes in with glass panes.

A shulker box can be dyed brown by combining it and one brown dye together in the crafting interface of either your inventory or a crafting table.

Crafting Brown Candles in Minecraft

Candles can be crafted by adding together one honeycomb and one string. In a crafting grid, just place the string in the box above the honeycomb.

To dye the candle brown, just add it to the crafting grid with one brown dye.

Dyeing Leather Armor Brown in Minecraft

Any piece of leather armor can be dyed a deeper brown by adding it to a crafting grid with one brown dye.

Using a smithing table, trim can be added to this dyed armor to make it even more unique.

Just like regular leather armor, leather horse armor can be dyed a darker brown using brown dye. Simply combine both together in a crafting table, and voila!

After taming a wolf, interacting with them while holding brown dye will give them a pretty brown collar.

Crafting Brown Fireworks in Minecraft

To craft brown fireworks, you must start by combining one gunpowder and one brown dye to create a brown firework star.

Afterwards, you can combine the firework star, another piece of gunpowder, and one piece of paper to create three fireworks. In the crafting table’s 3×3 grid, place the gunpowder in the top center box, the firework star in the middle center box, and the paper in the center box of the bottom row.

It can be launched into the sky by interacting with the ground while holding the fireworks in your hand.

How to Craft Brown Dye in Minecraft

The only way to craft brown dye in Minecraft is through the use of cocoa beans. Cocoa beans can only be found in Jungle biomes. They grow as cocoa pods on jungle trees, and at most can drop three to four beans at once. One cocoa bean can be used to create one brown dye.

If you need a lot of brown dye, it’s imperative that you know how to grow cocoa beans. They can also be used for cookies, making them a must-have crop!

Growing Cocoa Beans in Minecraft

In order to grow cocoa beans, you need a few jungle logs as well as cocoa beans to plant. Start by placing the jungle logs in whatever formation you would like.

Interact with the logs while holding the cocoa beans to plant them.

Now all you need to do is wait! There are three growth stages for cocoa beans, with the middle two only dropping one bean and the final stage dropping three or four.

They are ready to be harvested as soon as they become the large and brown cocoa pods that can be seen on the right side of the above image!

Wandering traders will give players three brown dyes in exchange for one emerald. 

If you only need a little and don’t have cocoa beans, it’s not a bad trade to make! You can do it up to 12 times, allowing you to get 36 brown dyes at once.
